Stony Plain Heritage Finders' Guide

Stony Plain has a rich past, with many fascinating stories that have become folklore and a part of its heritage. The first homestead in the Stony Plain area was that of John L. McDonald. His settlement would later become the original town-site, which was located two miles south of present-day Stony Plain.
In 1906, the railway came through the area, but it was about a "country mile" from where the town-site was. The town moved to its current location. By 1908, the population was about 1,000. An application was submitted to the provincial government, and, on December 10, 1908, Stony Plain was officially incorporated as a Town.
Over time, as communities grow, many old buildings are torn down to make way for new developments; however, many of the buildings in Stony Plain remain from the days of old, and the preservation of the more unique buildings is undertaken in earnest. Around town, you can still see some of them. Main Street in Stony Plain still has some of the original structures, albeit renovated: the Professional Building, the Stony Plain Hotel and others still occupy the street.
To preserve the past, the Town has developed an aggressive murals program, which tells the stories of Stony Plain's history. Since its launch in 1989, the murals program has been sharing these experiences and telling these stories with residents and visitors alike. Located throughout the community, the 33 murals (at present count) attract hundreds of tourists every year.” (Taken from the Town of Stony Plain http://www.stonyplain.com/Visitors/Our-Community/Our-Heritage.htm)

The Archives
The Musée Héritage Museum Archives acquires and preserves archival material significant to the memory of St Albert and area. Our holdings include over 100 metres of material including personal papers, oral histories, municipal records, business and community organization records. The material includes thousands of photographs, negatives and slides as well as ledgers, manuscripts, letters, maps, cassette tapes, videocassettes and digital files. Archival holdings are rare, original and unpublished so much care is taken to preserve the material. The archives is also in the process of digitizing its holdings so the material can be more easily accessible to the public.

In addition to the archives, the Musée Héritage Museum has a special library. This library consists of over 1000 books that are unique to the history of Alberta and St Albert. The books are non-circulating but available for reading at the museum.

To get information about archives in general, the Archives Society of Alberta has created a tutorial to explain the many aspects of archives: www.archivesalberta.org/webtutorial/openme.html
